Smart Grid 

As the world's population continues to grow, the electric utility sector will need to transform how electricity is delivered in order to meet increased energy demands. The current electric grid system will need to be more efficient and be based on better information to insure that the network will operate at a steady high-speed pace which will benefit not only the suppliers and consumers, but the environment as well.

The USCEI is leading an effort to deploy new energy technologies on campus for evaluating the potential to improve the overall efficiency of the current electric grid system. Funded by the Department of Energy (DOE), researchers are working in conjunction with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) to develop new technology protocols for a smart electric grid network. This includes assessing the information needs and opportunities for a larger scale deployment of a smart electric grid.
