In the United States alone, buildings account for over 39% of all energy consumption and significantly contribute to a large proportion of the nation's greenhouse gas emissions. In order to reduce these impacts and improve building efficiency and sustainability, the USC Energy Institution (USCEI) works in collaboration with the Innovation in Integrated Informatics LAB (iLAB) research group to develop new and innovative building designs, technologies, and management practices.
Currently, researchers are conducting a two stage comprehensive analysis of three buildings on the USC Park Campus that focuses on improving building efficiency and performance without sacrificing human comfort factors.
Stage 1 (data collection and evaluation)
For the first phase of the project, the focus is on evaluating four main contributing factors to building efficiency: occupant comfort, facilities monitoring and management, Building Information Modeling (BIM), and the LEED green building rating system. The study collects data from these main factors to help researchers gain a better understanding of the correlations between energy consumption and comfort, building design and comfort, and building design and energy consumption.
Once the data is evaluated, it is projected to guide researchers toward finding a solution for improving and increasing environmentally sustainable property development and management practices.
Stage 2 (response)
During the second phase of the project, researchers will install energy efficient systems, by simulating energy performance and organizing sensors, controls, and monitored data in response to research evaluations and recommendations for improving the energy efficiency of the buildings.
- Develop new building designs and management strategies that promote sustainable environmental and economic practices.
- Reduce the cost of maintenance while increasing and improving the energy conservation and efficiency of facilities without sacrificing human comfort factors.
- Develop innovations in Engineering Education, Integrated Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) Practices, and in Construction Automation & Simulation.
